Drug dependence is the process by which both mind and body start depending on substances. A physical dependence starts occurring when the body continuously relies on substances to function therefore when an individual stops using these drugs they experience withdrawal symptoms. On the other hand, psychological dependence encompasses emotional dependence and the individual keeps taking the drug to relieve the psychological distress. When alcohol is used as a coping mechanism for unpleasant emotions, the individual becomes emotionally reliant on it.
